Our Programs: African American Programming

Churches

The Coordinator for African American Outreach reaches hundreds of African Americans monthly through local churches. Trainings on STD and HIV for clergy and congregations have proven to be an effective way to spread the word on prevention, testing, and treatment. Local church congregrations receive sensitivity training and education on HIV and STD modes of infection and prevention. In addition, church leaders receive one-on-one training on how to address HIV/STD related issues in a religious setting. World AIDS Day is an additional initative which annually engages the faith community in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS through a Council-organized interfaith prayer service of hope and remembrance.

Barbers and Beauticians

African American barbers and beauticians are trained on HIV/STD issues as peer educators and supplied with educational and safety materials to distribute to patrons who frequently share their secret fears and questions with their hairdressers.

SISTA

The Sisters Informing Sisters on Topics about AIDS program is a CDC proven effective curriculum that includes a multi-session series of events. Held in the homes of African American women, this intervention provides a safe space to discuss the issues surrounding prevention including safe sex partner negotiation, self-esteem and skills-building, and the practice of correct condom application.
