Our Programs: Latino Programming

Tiendas

Many businesses and workplaces frequented by Latinos including Latino groceries (Tiendas), and one local billiard hall, are kept stocked with Spanish-language educational pamphlets and safety materials to provide easy access to materials for the populations who need them most. In addition, Tienda owners or staff are provided one-on-one training to be peer educators for their patrons.

ESL Classes

The Coordinator of Latino Outreach gives presentations on HIV/STD prevention education to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered at Central Carolina Community College to educate individuals that otherwise may not be reached.

PUEDES

PUEDES (Promotoras Unidas Educando de la Sexualidad), the newest initiative of the Council, is a 5-session group level intervention for 10-15 Latina women. PUEDES, designed for Hispanic women, provides a safe space to discuss issues surrounding prevention including safe sex partner negotiation, self-esteem, and the practice of correct condom application.

HoMBReS/MAN for Health

In a groundbreaking three-way partnership with UNC's School of Public Health and Wake Forest University's School of Medicine, the Council is leading an intervention which studies the sexual health of Latino men. Through the network of local soccer leagues, this 3-year project trains Latino men to become "Navigators" on issues of sexual health and sources of referral and support to their peers.
